Educational Workshop Visit

Henry Moore Studios & Gardens offers paid educational workshops for school, college and university groups (Year 2+). Workshops run Wednesday–Friday all year round. ‘Becoming a Sculptor’ workshops aim to foster an understanding of Henry Moore and sculpture. Our new Learning Studios offer space for students of all ages to learn about materials and processes, through hands-on making experiences.

Group Sizes and Supervision

  • Max 30 students per session

Supervision ratios:

  • Primary: 2 adults per 15 students
  • Secondary: 1 adult per 15 + one additional adult
  • College/University: 1 adult per 15 students

 

Visit Content

  • Exploratory tour (30 mins) of sculpture gardens
  • Experimenting with quick drawing and sculpting (1 hour 15 mins) in the Learning Studios. Students will be guided through quick drawing and sculpting techniques, using a variety of materials and processes such as wax resist drawing, clay and plasticine, to establish material confidence.
  • Afternoon sculpting time (2 hours). Sculpting options include carving, maquette making or collaborative sculpting, working to a larger scale and with materials students do not typically have access to in the classroom such as plaster and wax.

For the afternoon sculpting session, please choose from the following options below during the checkout process:

A) Carve your own sculptures: Students will carve into blocks of Plaster to make their own sculptures to take home.

B) Plaster, wax and flint maquette making: Students will use plaster and wax to build onto flint found in the grounds of Henry Moore’s home, to make small sculptures as he did.

C) Collaboratively sculpting with a variety of materials (due to the scale of these works, it may not be possible for groups to take these away): Students will work in groups, using a variety of materials to make larger sculptures.
